Hosting games on PROXY

I spoke with a guy who knew something about networking and combined with a program I had picked up a while ago I am now able to host Heroes IV games on my computer via direct IP, even though it is a network computer not directly connected to the internet. Here is the steps:


-Get PortMapper, it is a freeware program.

-Put it on your main computer, ie the one with a direct connection to the internet.

-Find out the local IP adress of the network computer you want  to host the game on (it will say what it is in the host screen of the game).

-Run the port mapper on the main computer. It will appear in your system tray.


-Right click on it and click "configure". Click on "configure mapping".

-Click "add" and set it up to redirect port 4377 to the local IP of the network computer you are hosting the game on. Leave the protocol at "TCP", and interfacte at "any interface".

-When you have done this you should see something like this:


-Get the player who is joining the game to connect, via direct IP, to your external IP adress. I do not know an easy way to find this out, but if you get the proxy warning when you start gamespy (see below) it will be shown there.


And that's it! I am postive it works, I just tested it. I hope being able to host games on networked computers will expand the number of people who are able to host games. I just hope two things. One that people understand what to do from the post, and two that the word gets out so we can have more people hosting. I urge any TOH players to send people to http://www.strategyplanet.com/homm/multiplayerfaq.shtml#networkhost if they are asking why they can't host or saying that they can't host in the GS chat. From what I see around, not having a whole segment of the community able to host games limits play opportunities greatly...

That sounds great but I don't have access to my "main" computer. So I would like to take this opportunity to ask for a way to host games without access to the proxy. I thankyou in advence.

I'm sorry but I'm pretty sure that's physically impossible. How much do you know about network code and IP addresses? Cause I could explain (roughly) but it might not be worth my time doing so if you don't know what I'm talking about.

You cant install on a computer you 've not access to..

Situation:
Heroes needs a specific port wich according to Psychobabble is: 4377

Well the thing is, when you are behind a firewall (here proxy) most unneeded ports are closed or blocked. This is done for protection off course

Port 80 should be open when one wants to surf the internerd
port 21 is used for ftp
Simple said: those are the ones needed for normal use
(yeah I know)

So when one is trying to get connection through that specifick port its -logically- blocked..
No (IP) connection there & then.

What must be done is, 'route' or map the IP adress from the joiner to the ip/computer of the host.

The host sends & recieves ip packets on port 4377 & 'listends' on that specific port..
When packets start 2 come on that port. voila: connection!

But the easiest way to accomplish a connection is:
Open port 4377 on the proxy or firewall



Also, have a look at the topic: How to play behind a router

BTW: a simple way to get your proxy ip adress in Windows:
"Inside" adress look at the tcp/ip properties of your networkcard -> look for gateway ip adress.
Thats the ip of the proxy on your (home-) nerdwork
Or open a command prompt & type:
windows 2k or XP: "Ipconfig /all"
windows 95/98   : "winipcfg"

Outside:
Try a traceroute
Open a command prompt & type:
"tracert www.ToHeroes.com"

the 1st adress after the ip adress of the proxy, which you just discovered, look a few lines above) should be the 'outside' ip adress of your proxy..
