Things I Missed from H4 while playing an H3 map

I just got done playing one of my favorite H3 maps, and after playing H4 for a little while now, I found some things that I missed from H4.

Yes, I know all the grief H4 gets, but there are some things that 3DO got right.

First, caravans.  Man, I missed those terribly while I was playing.  It would have made my life a bit easier, and instead ended up getting some heroes expert in earth magic and expert in wisdom so I could teach them town portal to beam the army around.

Second, the patrol zone.  It was sort of odd parking close to a monster and knowing that my hero was safe.

It seemed strange being able to cast a devastating spell before my opponent, thus neutralize his (IMHO) most dangerous stack.  It seemed odd that I could cast blind on his huge stack of devils because I had expert ballistics, thus I could cast a spell while it was the catapults turn to go.

Yes, I’m an advocate of having the hero in the army.  It’s reminiscent of one of my all-time favorite games, “Master of Magic”.  Some of the game play is similar between MOM and H4.  Of course, if 3DO ever decides to put in “settlers”, then I’ll know something is definitely strange.

The “create illusion” spell.  Yes, I know I have “clone”, however the clone has a rousing 1 hp, regardless of the creature cloned, or how many you did.  (I like cloning large stacks of angels for their res, plus their downright destructive tendencies and use them to absorb the retal).

Having a grandmaster life magic type with gm resurrection.  There were definitely places I wish I could have had half my army returned to me.  **sigh**

I sort of got used to the idea of having the T-birds actually do lightning damage every time they strike.

There are still some places where H3 outshines H4.  It’s kind of nice knowing you have 50k a day coming in because you have a capital (4k), plus a bunch of town halls (at 2k ea), gold mines, etc.  Plus there’s just something comforting about carrying around an army of 700 angels or so.

The artifacts in H3 seem to be of a whole lot more use than the artifacts in H4.  Including one of the most broken items available.  (The dreaded “cloak of the undead king”.  Can you say “instant army?)

Hero hiring.  There’s just something about going into the tavern and finding a level 34 mage waiting for you to hire him out.  Yeah, he was a pain in the neck to take out, but now you can have him on your side, complete with all the bennies.  I know you don’t get a lot of choice in H3 as to which hero is going to show up, but at least I can buy heroes until I find one I like if I have the money.

One thing I would like to be able to do is hire a hero out of my prison after the color has been eliminated.  If I manage to capture a high level hero flying the orange flag, why shouldn’t I be able to convince him to join my side if his kingdom no longer exists?

These are just my thoughts.  Anybody have anything to add?  Personal observations?

Odd, perhaps. In HOMM3 it was compensated with clever map design, now the creatures move around, so you have more freedom with terain placement. However, it also let's map designers come up with "open field maps" where you drop an artifact in the middle of nowhere and set the patrol zone of the guarding stack. Thus the maps look really more barren, even on grassland terrain.

I am an advocate of not having heroes in combat (in HOMM). It reminds me of one of the best games I started my PC gameplaying career with, HOMM2.

Do illusions have more than 1 hp? Then it is broken! I really do not like this. Creatures in combat for free. Clone was at least balanced with the one-strike death to the cloned stack.

What about not loosing any of your army to simultaneous retaliation? There were many battles in HOMM4 I wish I could save my first-levels by carefully planning the first strike.

You bet Hero specialties, clear perception of the battlefield, battle log, unique castle atmosphere due to graphics and soundtrack, better performance in multiplayer due to lower requirements are just the most obvious. You said more yourself

The good things HOMM4 added:
-caravans
-no more chaining
-more skill levels (grandmaster)
-ability to choose whether to learn skills at the witch hut
-ability to block ranged shots by putting a stack in the direct line of damage,
-I like the opening soundtrack a lot!
-flagging of mills

Create Illusion

Yes, illusions have more than one hit point, however they are limited in their hp by the level of the caster.  (So instead of creating a clone of 100 angels with one spell, the stack is limited to how high a level the caster is.  It may only give you 3 or 4 angels.)

However, you can keep creating the illusions (and one of the things I don't particularly like is you can use your own illusion to keep making more of them.  Seems a bit odd to me).

Yippee! I'm not the only one who likes the both!

I had some problems too playing H3 after H4.

1. The yes and no buttons was in the "wrong" places. That's why I was killed by some Nagas in Naga Bank.

2. I missed the possibility to move without heroes. I had to purchase a hero just to get some creatures to the main hero.

Cool, then illusion is not that as imbalanced as I thought. Sounds fine

Yes, it is very similar to MOM, that is one of my favourites too.

Illusion. Don't forget that it is only one click to destroy the whole stack.

Every time i play H3 now, the main thing that stand out for me is that there's no "buy all" button to get my troops, i look for it often *sigh*

Another is that the creatures cannot travel without a hero, so many times its seemed easy enough for my to just run my level 7s out to meet my main army halfway, then i remember i have to buy another hero to get that done hehe

Even before getting H4, I hated having to keep track of whether someone had been by every single windmill, waterwheel, leprechaun, or whatever, that week.  Now, I forget to do that half the time.  Also, I miss having creatures accumulate in their out-of-town dwellings, to be easily caravaned in at my convienience.

What's really annoying:  after I've played H4 for a while, then switch to H3, something about the way the game screen moves gets to me.  The whole scene moves with every little gallop of the hero's horse, and it makes me dizzy.

After heading back to H4, among other things, I miss the little movies before the campaigns.  The chalk pictures just aren't the same.  Plus, the character voice for Solymr is awful.

Edit (after playtesting this):  About illusions -- in order to have that "one click" to get rid of them, you must have a hero with either Death or Order magic.  Plain vanilla Nature, Chaos, Life, and Might heroes all have to deal with the illusions the old fashioned way.  Life has a chance of getting Order magic through the Seminary, but the rest have to level through the Combat offerings or find a tuition location first.

A better HOMM?!

Both Heros 3 and Heros 4 are terrible in their own ways.
Heros 3 have too little things while Heros 4 have too much graphics, making you dizzy and a little bit difficult to adjust to.
It's battlefield is horrible,it's terrible,it's sickening.
It's the worst thing I ever saw other than a real life  full blooded battle.
I think Heros 3 is one of the best games around, with it's classic gameplay,a superb battleground and some of the best creatures the world has ever seen.
I heard my friend said Heros 5 is a totally different game.
Is that true,all you gamers?
Now if only they can combine the good things from both Heros 3 and 4 to form one absolutely solid game.
