10-year-old veteran of H3 switching to H4

First of all - the title might've seemed a bit confusing - I'm not 10, I have been playing H3 for 10 years is what I meant.
I did play a bit of H4, but didn't like it back then so switched back to Heroes 3.

But now I feel like "Why not?" so I decided to get myself Heroes IV Complete (is that really bad if it's from torrents? after all, 3DO and NWC are dead/bankrupt, so in the end it doesn't matter at).
What big changes, aside from no unit upgrades, isometric view, "unit branching", and "active" heroes in battle should I be wary of? (wary or vary? I can't tell, my English is horrible).

It's worth noting that when playing Heroes 3, I played Necropolis (Death) almost exclusively, if that matters.

In H4 you can raise vampires with the highest(grandmaster) necromancy level.
Also your armies don't need heroes to travel on the map(that is what I like from the begining).
There were 3 versions at the time-The Original Heroes 4,The Gathering Storm and The Winds of War.After that Equilibris was made.
There were solved some balance issues.

I tried once H5,but I found it too similar with some other games I showed no interest to and never played it,but I enjoy both H3 and H4.

I am getting myself the Complete version.
Also, raising Vamps sounds sweets as hell.

Because H4 vampires are effectively Vampire Lords from H3, which were a core part of my Necropolis gameplay.

Also, is the Equillbris (am I spelling that right?) an equivalent of WoG, of sorts?

I think all changes in a H4 map are done by the map editor.
Anyway you can look around in the sub-forum for some mod for Equilibris if you want to.
You can check here for some modding info .

Wary. When in doubt, you can use some dictionary. There are plenty of those on the net. I tend to use dictionary.cambridge.org
I listed some changes below. Don't know if you will find them all "big". In no particular order:
- There are potions, especially Potions of Immortality.
- Caravans were introduced, creatures grow every day and creatures in external dweelings don't reset each week.
- Stealth skill allows stealing stuff from behind neutral creatures. There is no Logistics skill. Instead, Pathfinding on higher levels increases movement points.
- Towns make less gold.
- Each stack has its own movement points on adventure map (this practically eliminates chaining of creatures).
- Magic skills are needed to learn even level 1 spells
- When a stack retaliates in combat, it can't retaliate again for 1 turn, not until turn ends.
- Damage formula is different. It's now:
number_of_creatures*damage*attack/defense
Just know that in h4 it's attack/defense that counts and not attack-defense.
- Also, when more than one spell is cast on the same target, their effects usually multiply instead of adding, which leads to strong spell combos.
- Talking about spells, heroes generally regenerate more spellpoints.
- Hero/army after fleeing/surrendering stands near town, so no need for additional gold to rehire from tavern. Fleeing hero looses movement, though.
- Fortifications no longer increase troop production and are not required to build Capitol(because there are no Capitols).
- Sieges are a bit different: gate can be destroyed with meele attacks only and walls can't be destroyed at all, towers don't shoot, instead they give bonus stats to creatures or heroes that stand on them.

Yeah, sort of. Equilibris improves scripts, adds a few things and changes balance, but it doesn't introduce such crazy game mechanics enhancements as WoG.

One thing I've already noticed is the significantly slower gold income.
Also, the new battle system is good - I would say even very good.

The fact that surrounding terrain type reflects the townscreen is a nice feature - although some graphics themselves are fairly awful. (the game looks and sometimes sounds awful, but I try to not care about it - but gotta say, the soundtrack is great).
Haven't touched the campaigns yet, but from what I hear, they're much deeper than the H3 ones.

Also, I want to make something clear - are all heroes in the game refugees from Enroth after the Reckoning or only some of  them? (I noticed a few Necro heroes to make a comeback - Sandro, Tamika, Charna, Moandor/Moander come to my mind ere).

One thing that bothers the cr*p outta me - the adventure map. It feels kinda dull, and moving on it feels jaggy.

Heroes IV is much much different than any other Heroes game, but it's still a good game. If not for the poor visuals (justified by 3DO/NWC going downhill) it would be arguably the best in the series.
Good - yes. Just not AS good as Heroes 3.

General changes:

-Ranged retaliation on all ranged units
-Line of fire/line of sight (LoS) becomes a factor in combat - you may assign tougher/slower/magic resistant units to shield your squishier units from enemy ranged attacks or prevent them from being targeted by most spells
-All factions are now allied with two other factions. This is one of the more significant changes for everyone except Death (mixing live + undead heroes/creatures = massive morale penalty). You may now hire heroes allied with your faction from your tavern as well as learn spells associated with these factions via a single mage guild upgrade. This opens up lots of interesting possibilities
-Heroes are no longer just figureheads. In H3 building your army was your main priority, whether through map control or just plain rampaging through enemy strongholds. Hero development was secondary (or at least, slightly less of a priority). In H4 the fact that your hero is now also creature unit means that hero development is now just as important as building your army since your hero -is- now part of your army. In some specific situations it can even be argued that developing your hero should be your main priority.
-Fog of war added
-Creatures may now travel the world map. You may now use creatures to scout/roam or stand as sentries
-Caravan feature introduced (yes, H4 did it first)

Most of them are, about a handful of them aren't. A lot of them were present in the events from Heroes 1-3, but remained in the sidelines until now.
