Canadian beer's good... so the karaoke will be at one side while the other side has the live band?

I agree that some Canadian beer is good, but I prefer the cold crisp taste of Strongbow cider. "Gulp, gulp, gulp...Ahhh!"

As for the Karaoke and the Live Band, they would be at separate ends of the establishment, but would also be separate from the "Seating, drinking, & talking" area and the "Smoker's Lounge". This would require, however, that the place have a rectangular or square layout...and who really wants to be "square"...nobody, right?!

It is also possible to have some of these elements on different floors of the establishment. Let's say, under-age drinkers in the basement; Karaoke & Live Band on the ground level; "Sitting, drinking, & talking" area upstairs; and the "Smoker's Lounge" on the roof of the building. I think that with this layout, many people would be happy with the separation of different elements, but they could still easily enjoy the variety. Let me know if I am on the right track with this idea as the Monster of Boredom and his apprentice, Monotony, are relentless foes that must be struck down!

Hmm, I would hesitate to go in the multi level direction. If we're talking about defeating the Boredom Monster and his pal Monotony, the last thing we want to do is make it easier for them to defeat us (Divide and Conquer!) We need to maintain a united front against them!

I would propose:

a) a superior ventillation system which would allow smokers and non smokers to share the air, without the blue cloud of doom hovering above us.

b) underagers are stamped at the door on their right hand, serving personnel must check the right hand before selling alcohol

c) live bands and karaoke simply don't occur at the same time No need for two stages silly!

That's some good ideas... that's what I was thinking for the stage too... or else the pub would be pretty huge... It's just that if you use all the ideas given before then all those things might be hard to manage... just a thought

Good thread, better beer!

Yay for Guinness! I applaud your tastebuds Conan.
Smithicks is quite nice as well, but if you want a proper Irish Ale, I suggest you try Caffrey's. It's smooth like Guinness, no fizz to make you fel bloated and slips down your throat like alcoholic silk...mmmmm.

And Leo, if you like Strongbow cider, then you must try either Magner's or Bulmer's (it's called Magner's in Ireland, but the the English call it Bulmer's. It's the same drink anyways)

And like Pan, wen I'm chilling over a few brews with my buddies I like to be able to hear the conversation. Otherwise how am I supposed to inject a healthy dose of sarcasm into the proceedings??!!

But when I go out on the town I like to go to a banging nightclub with lots of flashing lights, loud music (rock for preference) and cheap drink offers (buy 2 vodkas get one free etc).

And sadly I don't have a band right now, but I'm working on it and might have more news in a month or so for you all, but until then we can set up the karaoke booth and laugh at everyone.

Good give & take of ideas

Well, it seems that Pandora has stepped up as the "great tactical leader" that this righteous Crusade needed. Only someone with a keen militaristic mind would have noticed my potentially disastrous blunder of dividing our "forces". Thank the Tavern Gods that she corrected me before I led us towards certain defeat!

I don't know, however, if I'm sold on the idea of letting people smoke in the same room as non-smokers. If we were to have this powerful ventilation system that would make 2nd-hand-smoke negligible, then chances are that this uber-ventilation would be so loud that Pandora, Boogieman, & Asmodean would not be able to sit, drink, & talk normally...let alone hear me sing awesome Karaoke! Please continue developing ideas on this subject.

Another note on Pandora's ideas: Hand stamps are usually ineffective because older customers can always go & buy drinks for the yougins. Perhaps we could institute a "Free Xtacy" for under-agers, but in reality only give them fancy placebos! That way, all of the older customers could be "in on the joke" & laugh at how the yougins act like goofs, while not actually being stoned.

As Rage & Pandora have pointed out, one stage should be enough! I agree with this and propose that on weekend nights...and maybe 1 other weeknight, we have good loud Rock bands (which Asmodean prefers); and the rest of the time, the stage could be used for Open-mic Nights, Blues/Jazz Music, and Karaoke.

Asmodean, thanks for the cider suggestion! I looked up "Bulmer" on Google, however, and discovered that they brew StrongBow. So maybe we are talking about the same thing. But perhaps not, because when I looked up Magners, I recognized this brand as well. It just might be that we get both brands here in Canada and that we are simply not aware that they are the same thing (i.e. Molson Canadian was labelled as Laurentide in Quebec, just so that it could be sold to Francophones)

N.B. An updated list is coming shortly!

So far, our Favorite types of Taverns/Pubs/Bars would need to:

*Have a good-sized stage with a versatile lighting system for:

#1- Rock Bands (on Thursday & Friday nights)
#2- Open-mic Nights (every Tuesday)
#3- Blues & Jazz music (on Sunday & Monday nights AND during every lunch time)
#4- Live Bands that playing drinking songs (on Wednesday nights)
#5- a DJ & some dancers (on Saturday nights)
#6- Karaoke singing (late Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights).

*Reserve an area (at the opposite end of the establishment from the stage) for people to sit, drink, & talk.

*Have a seperate & enclosed "Smokers area". (I find this is a fair compromise between allowing smoking anywhere in the establishment, or banning it altogether.)

*Combine elements from the Australian Pub with elements from a "typical" Irish Pub.

*Allow under-age drinking...in the basement of the establishment.

*Have a Virtual Bartender.

*Have a large variety of drinks from all over the world (ex: StrongBow, Magners, Molson Canadian, Guinness, Smithwicks, & Caffreys). LOTS OF 'EM too!

*Enforce a "No Disco Balls" & "No TVs" rule!

*Sell good food! (Battered fish, Cheesesticks, Garlic bread, curly & spicy Fries, Poutines, Potato skins, Chicken wings).

I'd love to try Caffrey's, but I don't think they import to Canada I'm a great beer fan (PP) so I enjoy you sharing your knowledge!

EDIT: Dude!! I found Caffrey's at the liquor store here in Ottawa, Canada Friday night. We had a get together at Jebus' place and Léo Lion was there. Real good that beer, alot lest taste than Guinness I must admit. It was indeed not a bloating kind of beer, and man it went down well. Real good beer. I personally like Kilkenny better that that thought. I like my beers to have a little more taste.
Thanks for the tip though, it was indeed nice to try something new (see PP for details.)

Water of Life

Any pub worthy of "Tavern" status must have a decent selection of scotch whisky behind the bar, decent music on the speakers (Johhny Cash anyone...?) and a tasty throng of medusa queens to while away the wee hours with... ;-^)

"The Haven" in St Fergus springs to mind!

I hope you don't drop too many drinks your 1st day on the new job, Asmo! Hahaha!

Is there a website to this place or is it a "hidden little gem"?!

Oh! One more thing...if ever you end up repeating your little story from Tell the Truth at your new place of work, please tell us which table was involved before we come & visit you! Hahaha!

Everyone knows that the real "Water of Life" is pure spice-essence spewed by the Sand Worms of Arrakis, otherwise known as Shai-Hulud, while being drowned in actual water.

Hey Heisenbug, do you have any specific brands of Scotch-Whisky that you prefer? In Canada, one of the most popular brands is called Canadian Club.

Svarog, I will add your Thread link to the "Karaoke Revolution" link in order to offer a better product overall!

My favourite type of Bar, Tavern, or Pub would absolutely need these people as staff.

Check out the pic I made & try to guess "who is who":

I can't wait to see what kind of crazy antics they get themselves into this week, eh?!
