Online-Problems...

Hey again,

I am sorry that I brought myself in violation with the rules of the community in my previous post. Still, my problem is the same, but I will try to phrase myself differently.

I DO HAVE heroes3. It's a SOD-version, apparently 4.0.0 - if that makes any sense. I do also have Gamespy 2.0. Problem is, when I try to play with a friend of mine on the net, we can't get it to work. We don't seem to find another, for some reason. What could the reasons be?

Is it because we have different versions? He claims to have the same version. But in the starting menu, when you open the game, we have different background pictures. Does this mean that we have slightly different versions?

So, I suppose the question is: How can I play online with my friend, who is by the way also a member of the community, and an exellent player.

I would be grateful for any tip or advice...

Version 4.0 is NOT a SoD version, it is "Heroes Complete", which includes all official Heroes 3 variations (RoE, AB, SoD).
All versions from 1.0 to 1.4 are RoE versions
from 2.0 to 2.2 are AB versions
from 3.0 to 3.2 are SoD versions

You can only play together, if u have either the same version, OR u both have the latest patch of different versions.

Means, if u have version 4.0, u can play with 1.4, 2.2,3.2 and 4.0

If u both have heroes complete (4.0) and still canīt play, then u prolly have a router or firewall problem.
But this problem can be solved also. What i need would be the text of the error message which occurs to one or both of u when u try to connect.

Thanks Angelito.

I wish I knew how to explain the problem properly, but I have litt experience with online-gameplay and the like.

So, I have Gamespy. And it seems my and my friend has the same version, 4.0. In other words heroes complete. When I open my Gamespy and log in, I have a list called "My games" at the left bar. If I am not mistaken, none of these were Heroes when I first entered. So I tried the "scan for games" option. I scanned C:, where the heroes folder is. But then it came up with Armageddons  Blade, for some reason. My and my friend wish to play SOD. Is it because AB is also in the folder, so that the search just picks the first game, or exe. which it encounters?

I don't know if this makes any sense to you. If not, try to ask my exact questions, and I will try to answer.

Thanks in advance...

Ok...first hint: erase (uninstall via control panel) your "Armageddons Blade" version. As i mentioned above, Heroes Complete (4.0) has ALL versions included.
So if you play with Ab (2.0, not patched!) and opponent with 4.0, it wonīt work.

Before u do that, u could try the following:
You can try to play vs your friend through TCP/IP. You start your game, click on "New", "Multiplayer", "TCP/IP"and then on "host". Now a blue window will appear which tells your session name (donīt change the "My Game", itīs not important) and your password (donīt give a password...not needed). So you just click on "OK". Now u are in the menu where u can chose your scenario or a random. Stay there and wait till your opponent arrives. You have to give him your current internet-IP so he can join. Now comes the tricky thing. The IP number u could read in that blue window with "My Game" and "Password" is NOT your interent-IP but your internal IP. To find out your current interent IP, u have to go here: whatismyip.com every time right before u start your game (coz your ip will change every time you connect new to the interent, except u have an own server!) and itīs shown immediately.
Give this IP to your friend, then he starts his game, clicks on "New", "Multiplayer" and "TCP/IP", but then he doesnīt click on "Host", but on the third button named "Search". He puts in the IP (no password), presses "OK" and then his name should appear in your games players list soon.

If this doesnīt work, then please tell me here and donīt forget the text of the error message.

Thx...good luck.

Thanks Angelito,

but he have in fact tried that. And I am aware that the IP-adress which is listed in the blue screen is not the correct one to use. I think all of this information is posted in your thread "how to solve my online gaming problems" etc... It is a very sympathetic and nice thread, but in this case, it still doesn't work.

No matter who hosts, the other persons gets the message "could not find that IP-adress!" when trying to search.

So we have tried via Gamespy 2.0. Only problem is, I can't manage to load my Heroes 3 SOD into the "My games" panel. If I search C: he doesn't find it, only AB. Should I deinstall it through the control panel, as you suggested?

What other options are there?

Thank you for trying to help me. I know more about heroes than I do about computers, that's my only esxuse...

I didn't mean to say that I have AB separately in addition to Heroes complete. I have AB because I have complete version, as a part of the complete version. I have tried removing it now, but I still can't find on Gamespy. It's really frustrating, there are so many ways to play heroes, and none of them seems to work. Is there a possibility that I could meet you Angelito, or anybode else who knows a lot about online-problems for that matter, in some kind of chat-room? Then I could more easily explain the problem, and you could give some suggestions.

I am not sure what you mean now. There is an option in MSN to invite someone to play a game, I have tried that. But when I do, the game doesn't start automatically on my computer, like it is supposed to. This is a bit odd, because it works for my friend. In other words, no matter who invites to the game (hosts it through msn) his computer automatically starts heroes, and mine does not. So I figure there is something wrong with my settings somwhere, but I don't know where.

Hmmm. Hard to say, really. Any more suggestions? Do you have any idea why I can't find the game when I run the "scan for games" options on Gamespy?

I donīt have any experience on gamespy though...canīt help u there.
But if the game doesnīt start when u have someone in your room and press launch, then this only happens coz the zone doesnīt detect your game installed. This can be solved easily as well. Read it up in my helping thread.

In the words of Guybrush Threepwood: Yikes!

It seems I mau have had the wrong version after all. When I hold the cursor over my exe-file, it says heroes 3.1. However, if I rightclick on it, enter properties and then version, it says 3.0. So I downloaded the patch from TOH, unzipped it in my heroes folder, and looked on the version again. It still says 3.0, not 3.2. And not only when I hold the cursor over it, but on properties/version.

Does this mean that the upgrading failed for some reason? If so, any idea what could have brought about this failure?

Best regards,

TheScholar.

You have to forward the needed ports to play each other.

Hei again. I suppose you thought my problem was solved now, Angelito. And it does seem that our computers find eachother without problems. But when I tried it out with my pal, we still got the message "That IP-adress was not found." I can assure you that none of us have any firewalls on, neither windows-firewalls or others. The only difference is, that my friend is connected to internet through a router. Thus, it seems that the problem is to "pass" the router, in some way. You mentioned something about forwarding your ports, we tried that. But first of all, our settings do not correspond exactly to the descriptions in your thread. So we still have the same problem.

And now I hear that there are more of you guys experiencing the same. Hope you can find the time to ponder on this little enigma...

Best regards,

The Scholar.

Ok, I am replying to my own post now.

Just wanted to mention an additinal problem. I so happen to have a Heroes 3.0 exe as well. When I want to update this to 3.2, I follow the instructions given in the thread of Angelito. I download directly to the desktop. I unzip to my the folder where the exe is located. It runs, but still the version is the same. Not only the name of the exe when I move the cursor over it, but also when I rightclick, and enter properties and version. From this I conclude that now upgrade has taken place. Which again means that I cannot play that version whith another friend of mine again.

This is getting exceedingly complicated. Honours to he who can solve this mess...

This patch problem about non-upgraded "exe"-files is also a common one. Happens when the patch doesnīt recognize your exe file as an acceptable one. Reason? could be a broken file or could be a non-english file.
Contact me through MSN messenger this evening when u see me logging in and we will solve that.

The router problem of your friend can be solved also. If he is the only user behind that router who is doing onlinegames, we could solve it very quick by setting his comp on DMZ. How to do that will be explained in our MSN conversation.

Hei again.

You left the zone to early today Angelito, we didn't get the chance to discuss properly. I have to say I do understand that you get tired of helping people all the time. So the way I see it, you deserve the credit you get.

So, I still can't play online with my friend. We have tried absolutely everything that I can think of. It seems we both have a problem. Let me recapitulate:

MY FRIENDS PROBLEM: My friend is connected to the net through a router. When we try to play through TCP/IP we both get the message "that IP-adress was not found!", no matter who hosts. This problem must be connected to the router and my friends connection, cause it worked fine when me and Angelito tried it out. Just to make it clear: All firewalls and even all virusprograms are switched off on both computers. We have the right IP, which is found on whatismyip.com.

Today, we even tried to arrange a DMZ for my friend. Either we did it wrong, or it didn't work.

So, MY PROBLEM: We tried other types of connection as well. We tried to Gamespy 2.0, where I use the option "scan for games." I choose the exact folder where my heroes. exe is installed, but it doesn't find the game.

We tried the Zone. There, I got the message that the Zone "was unable to detect heroes on your computer," or something like that.

We tried to launch the game directly from MSN. My friends game launches, no matter who invites. Mine does not.

So, my game seems to be hard to find for different types of programs. And my friends computer seems equally hard to find through TCP/IP.

I hope my problem is understandable to you. If someone can figure out this problem, he or she should in my eyes have a bucket full of quality points for that alone.

Help a fellow member who is stranded abroad without the possibility to play Heroes, a game we all cherish!

Best regards,

TheScholar.

Sorry for yesterday, but had to handle other stuff at home.
The problem which needs to be fixed is the router of your friend, nothing else, coz we both could connect fine as u mentioned already. And as long as HIS router has the needed ports closed, u canīt send data to his comp (IP not found) and he canīt send data OUT of his router (IP not found).

The error message about "We canīt find your game installed on your harddrive" is a common problem and is also mentioned in my helping thread. What u need is the "setupreg.exe" file. How to handle with that file is described here in the first post, point 5.)

If i will get online today evening, we could talk again, would also be helpful if your friend could join our conversation so i could talk to him directly. I would need some more infos about his router, then we will surely make that thing work!

See you later then...

Hi...

I'm thinking you're starting to hate this thread, Angelito.

Well, today we tried to set up a DMZ. My friend claims to have done exactly as you said. Still, the message when trying to connect is the same: "That IP-adress was not found."

Just out of curiosity, what type of connection do you have? I mean, there was no problem for me to join you when you hosted through TCP/IP. I conclude that you most likely don't have a router.

And the other problem is also the same. Now I removed my heroes and installed it again. So I only have one heroes folder. Then I downloaded the setup-file from your thread. On the zone, I still get the message that my Heroes was not found. It doesn't change if I reboot.

We didn't try the port-forwarding-trick, that's next tommorrow. But I figure since the DMZ didn't work, prolly that won't work either. I consider quitting my job, moving from Paris back home to play heroes on the local network with my pal...

You are a patient human beeing...

If u installed the game new, the setupreg.exe file alone will not help probably. What u have to do now is, start the game, watch the WHOLE intro movie, then start a single player game, play 3 or 4 turns, save that game. It sounds weird, but this seems to "activate" your multiplayer ability. When u have done that, click on the setupreg.exe file (which is hopefully in the same folder as your heroes.exe file), then reboot your comp and then enter the zone again. Now the zone should be able to detect your game.

And yes, i am connected to the internet without a router. I have a "fritz"-ISDN networkcard and iīm connected with dsl. But i also had to "allow all conections" in my connection menue of my networkcard, but i have my XP firewall activated and have allowed some "exceptions" there (zone.exe, heroes.exe and such...).

If the "DMZ" thing didnīt work, then your friend should try to look in the router menue from his OTHER comp and set this one on DMZ. Perhaps he just used the wrong internal IP.
