Joshua sat on the branches of one of the trees just twenty meters ahead of the trio. He looked at the few traps and snares that had been placed on the road and rolled his eyes. "Those three won't have any problem with this small scouting party." He looked farther into the woods. "But if I'm correct, again, there is a far larger group over there. Ten, maybe twenty of those small... Whatever the hell they call themselves."
"Well, then, we won't miss out on any of the fun, will we." He stated.
"You need to re-define your sense of fun." Joshua retorted as he moved to another tree farther in the woods.

The first pounce was sudden, and Vishan barely reppelled the strike. The creature was double the size of an imp and had small wings, had red skin and had small horns((HOMM3 familiar like)). Vishan treated it with cold steel, smashing the creature's head.
- Neither goblin nor kobold. What are they? Look like imps. But these aren't imps.- Vishan said and tried to scare away the fiends using his sword of which the creatures were afraid of.- Watch, out, more are coming!- He said and killed another two creatures.

Snorbald swatted the first creature away with his shield. A great heavy thud was heard as he did so, no doubt breaking several bones of the creature in the process. The creature flew through the air and collided with a nearby tree.
"I have never seen fiends of this sort." Snorbald said, as he sliced a second clean in half with his sword.
"But they have no good in mind for us." Snorbald stabbed at a third creature that tried to jump him. The swords went neatly through the chest, out the back and the creature, now dead, slid on through to the hilt.
"That or there is something that scares them more than we do." Snorbald whipped his sword so the body would be flung off.
A fourth creature that came at him got Snorbald's Dwarven sword in it's throat, nearly severing the head.

Rhain vaulted over the first fiend that came to him and sliced its throat open with his dagger from behind. The second came at him with a large mace. It swung it at him horizontally. Rhain jumped over it and grabbed onto the mace as it swung, dragging it downwards as well as the fiend's arm. Rhain stood on the mace with one leg and stomped on the elbow of the arm holding the mace, cracking it into a compound fracture. Rhain then kicked the fiend in the face, knocked it down, and slit its throat with his dagger.

Joshua watched as more of the creatures kept coming. "Alright, so there's a few more than I thought..." He looked at his blades, noting that the runes on black seemed to be glowing and that the flame pattern on Shine was as well.
"Well, are you going to do anything about it?"
"I guess I should..." And with that, Joshua jumped down on the closest fiend. He landed on the base of the creature's skull, snapping its neck. He whipped Black and Shine out of their hilts and swung out at the closest of the creatures. caught slightly by surprise, a handful fell before they had time to react. Joshua began to whirl around, almost as if he was dancing, cutting the creatures around him down with small, deadly slashes.

Snorbald shieldbashed two creatures before burrying his sword into a third's should and cut through to the armpit on the other side. The two who collided with Snorbald's shield were soon dispatched with a swift stroke of his sword.
"There are quite a bit more than four, my friend. You guessed wrong." Snorbald said with a black humor. "There seems to be no end to these fiends."
Another fell to the near-diamond edge of Snorbald's sword.
"What do we do? Stand and fight, and hope there is an end to this tide. Or do we force an opening for ourselves and make a run for it." Snorbald asked as he booted a fiend in the face.

Vishan cleaved through the fiend mass. His skin had turned to stone, and the weapons of the fiends had little effect to it. He moved near the others.
- I'd say we make a run for it. We're just wasting our strenght here. Kunn is not far from here.
With these words a cluster of trees moved out and a strange old man emerged. His long, uncombed beard was like moss, he wore his clothes inside out and had a terrified, yet furious look in his eyes. Using his staff, he commanded the trees to strangle the fiends with their branches.
- An unexpected help.- Vishan said.- Let's go, this isn't our fight anymore. The leshi is furious, and we might become his next victims.
Domerth and Taruss observed the small blade. It seemed that it grew in size, and now was about the size of a shortsword.
- What do we do with it?- Asked Domerth.
Taruss groomed his beard, thinking.
- Take it. Perhaps it would be helpfull to us.
Domerth packed the sword in the fur it lyed in.
- Omutt said that he wanted to go fishing.
- The weather's fine. The catch should be great. Let's drop this.- Domerth lifted up the fur with the sword- At the house and prepare a raft.

Nordskib was in some weird sort of drunken daze the entire morning.
He could not even figure out where he had slept, where he had awoken, and what he had eaten for supper.
He had apparently been posses by some spirit of drunkenness, because anything that resembled splitting headache was gone after the world became clear again.
At the moment he drank water, sat at a bench, chatting with a few old men, whom where talking about their wifes and miserable marriages.
Of course they overdid it, most of them where lucky married, it was common for this kind of gathering, but they shared some funny stories.

"Hah, I will not let one of the 'wild men' get the better of me!" Snorbald said as he severed a head and an arm in a single stroke. "But I agree that this is not our fight anymore."
Snorbald swung his shield in front of him and half ducked behind it.
"Follow me and stick close! The shortest way through them." Snorbald said and he charged into a throng of fiends shield first.

"Why walk when you can fly?" said Rhain as he vaulted onto a fiend and jumped off of it as if on a spring board and grabbed a tree branch. He swung forward and stuck his staff out in front of him and used it as a lever against another branch, propelling himself onward and upward. He moved very quickly through the trees as if he really was flying.

Joshua muttered a little under his breath and, literally, disappeared. He rematerialized ten meters away, killed the fiend that he landed next to, and climbed up at tree of his own. "See you around, and soon, alright?" He called to his party members before going off in an entirely different direction from them.

- The madman's gonna get killed- Vishan said while running. The amethysth glew brighter than a sun.- I think we need to tell Taruss about those fiends we fought.
Joshua strode through the woods, however soon enough found himself walking in circles. The angry spirits of the forest made sure that he got lost. He found himself surrounded by mighty evergreens, with no way to tell his location by the sun. The gemstones in his swords glew brightly. Joshua finds himself fighting with a rabid vampire((vampires a beastial, instinct driven creatures looking a lot like the vampire from the old movie "Nosferatu")).

Joshua whirled as the creature came at him again. This time, he hit the vampire with Black's edge, scraping along the vampire's left arm. The human-beast looking creature howled in agony as the acid corroded its flesh.
"Solen sul Tera!" Joshua cried out, pointing shine at the creature's head. A bright flash lit up the clearing and the vampire reached up to hold its eyes with the one good arm it had left. The left arm had already been bitten down to the bone. "Melr vol cresha." He hissed. A fist of shadows pounded the vampire into the trunk of a near bye evergreen. Panting, Joshua watched the fiend get back up, shaking its head.

Joshua's attacks enraged the fiend further. The vampire stood up and jumped onto Joshua, trying to maim him with his claws and fangs. The managed to scratch Joshua's left arm, leaving deep wounds in it.

Snorbald barreled into the throng of fiends. His heavy shield in front of him, every fiend that did not move aside was shunted or trampled under his and Vishan's feet.
The collisions did not stop Snorbalds momentum and the two warriors kept going shoving and trampeling fiends as they went. Snorbald made the way, as Vishan covered the rear and cut down every fiend that came to close.
And soon enough they had passed through the horde of fiends. Not that Snorbald stopped before they were well clear of them. Then he turned and laughed.
"Thought that wouldn't work, now did you? Haha. This works with full grown warrior, let alone diminutive wretches like that."

Joshua cursed and rammed Shine into the fiend's chest, sending it stumbling back singed as the white aura burned at its chest. But the dull blade didn't do anything more then stun the creature. "Ceroldin telar voer suldin." Joshua yelled out, and the Vampire seemed to wither a little bit. The scratch on his arm stopped bleeding and scabbed over at an accelerated rate.
Well, though it might kill me, this gives me a chance to practice my spells... He thought to himself. A seething mass of rage and hate called back, But I could end it, if you let me little mortal.

The vampire jumped on Joshua again, renewing the wounds in the arm and scratching his face, before being killed by a swift slash, splitting it's head in two. The healing spells that Joshua cast on himself only stopped the bleeding this time.
After wandering aimlessly through the woods for several hours, Joshua finally found himself back on the trail, though far from the place of battle.
- Nicely done.- Vishan said while trying to catch his breath. Being in stoneform required a lot of strenght. He had minor wounds all over his unprotected arms. Minor cuts and scratches which weren't a huge threat.
- I can see the walls of Kunn. We made it.- He said while covering his eyes from the bright sun.

The fiends that had gotten in his way ran when they looked into Joshua's eyes. They didn't want to get in the way of what was looking out of them. On the trail, he held his palm out to a tree and muttered his "Healing" spell again. The tree withered to a brown husk and died.
The wound on Joshua's arm and face scabbed over and almost disappeared. He smiled cruelly once before walking down the road humming a cheerful tune. The scimitars went back into their sheaths, and he seemed to change back into the kind and happy man that had been at the party last night.

"I believe the other man is coming out." said Rhain as he pointed towards the forest where Joshua was walking out.

Rhain was wrong. It wasn't Joshua. It was the leshi that they encountered in the grove. He looked at the trio, bowed his head in a thankfull way and returned to his domain.
- Never in my life...- Vishan said. - C'mon, Taruss needs to hear about it.
Moments later they sat by the table near the chieftain's home, and Vishan telling abou the adventures in the forest, with Snorbald adding a sentence or two.
- And after we came out of the woods, the Leshi soon emerged and thanked us. Weird huh? Oh, yeah, that looney mercenary leader possibly got lost in the woods.
Taruss groomed his beard.
- Interesting. We too here had some interesting encounters.- He told about the bird, miniature corpse of Domerth, the ruby sword and the seven challenges.
- I think that you're not the only one who's after the tomes brother.- Domerth said while slicing a fresh loaf of bread.
- You may be right. But whoever he is, he underestimates our skill.
Far away from Kunn, in the vast southern steppes, Shakk nomads had made a camp. They were resting from a long march.
The nomad leader, Allikha, entered the medicine man's tent. The medicine man was in a trance, and his young apprentice made sure that no one disturbs him.
- For how long is he like this?- the chief asked
The boy smiled and said:

This little stunt angered the chief, yet his eyes smiled. He twisted the boy's ear and said:
- Watch your tongue, for you may lose it one day!
- What does the chief want from Sahatt?
- How is it going, great one?
- It is going well. Soon we'll have the book. Now leave me for my meditation.
As the chief exited, Sahatt almost exploded from rage. He had failed to scare away the Urusshan chieftain and steal one of the Barash's blades. Yet he smiled. The dark magic was at his side. There will be countless opportunities to get rid of them. Sahatt The Great will fulfill the dream of his ancestor.
