XP problems -- can't play HOMM 2 or 3

As the subject states, I have upgraded to XP and now I can't get my HOMM games to work.  I found a tip that suggested opening the start menu, right-clicking on one of the games and selecting their properties.  You then tell the game to run as if it were used in Windows 98 and it should be fine.  Well, it isn't.  The games will load but then they freeze on the opening screen.  This sucks big time.  Does anyone know of any fixes or work-arounds for this??
Thanks in advance.

I had same problem, and I solved it easily by updating my graphics driver.

IE: If u have Geforce2Pro then XP will automatically install driver for Geforce2 GTS which wont work with the game......

Hope this helps

That's why I use 98SE. Cuz XP won't run older games like HoMM2.

About operating systems...
Has anyone seen (or maybe even tried) Windows Longhorn alpha that flows on the net? Looks very nice, from the screenshots I mean, as I didn't dare to try it.

hey all thanks for the input,I was able to get HOMM 3 to work adequately enough after uninstalling and deleting the source folders.  (I had to completely wipe the game off my hard drive and start over).  I can now play the game but the video is pretty screwy.  Depending on how you move the mouse or where you point it at certain times the screen shifts and splits, overlaps, etc.  Pretty weird, but I can deal with it until I figure that one out.
Thanks everyone.
