the BBC
ok... here's a couple of bits of information and some questions.
for those who don't live in the UK, I shall provide the Wikipedia page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC
I basically grew up on a diet of the BBC. through out my life-time, it has consistantly produced good shows, both for TV and radio, so where I grew up with bagpuss, I continue to watch with Screenwipe, QI, Mock the week and top gear. Yes, it's expensive, and the TV license is really annoying some times, especially now I'm living in my own flat, but I think about the shows that I love and really don't mind shelling out the money so that I can watch Doctor who on a saturday night as opposed to whatever sh**e they have on channel 4 and ITV (the two other terrestrial channels, and the only two that our TV can pick up.)
so here are my questions.
Have you seen any shows that have been produced in part or totally be the BBC? if so, how would you rate them?
Do you have anything similar where you live? if so, What? is it any good?

Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, 'Allo 'Allo!, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder, Men Behaving Badly and Coupling were all big in Serbia. I don't know if those were produced or just originally broadcast by the BBC though. I haven't seen Doctor Who until recently but have become a huge fan. (In addition, there have been a lot of other British programs syndicated there. I loved Granada's Sherlock Holmes, for example. Finally, I grew up with the classic Thames Television ident!)
Nowadays I watch BBC World News whenever I can, although I think PBS dropped it sometime ago. Unfortunately, I don't have BBC America.
Serbian national television was very similar to the BBC, but it went to hell during the war in the 1990s.

I think that British TV has lots of good stuff.
BBC has great stuff like Planet Earth and the Dino documentation, for example, but also great series, Life on Mars, Ashes, To Ashes, Lynley Mysteies, Doctor Who/Torchwood and and and.
But ITV makes great stuff as well. The Avengers, Simon Templar and the Prisoner in the 60s, Cracker, Touching Evil, Wire in the Blood, Inspector Morse, Midsomer Murders and and and.
Lots of great stuff.

I watch a lot of BBC shows, now directly off the BBC channels and back off of DVD's. Mock the Week, QI, Blackadder, A bit of Fry and Laurie, Would I lie to you, The Old Guys and quite a few more that don't spring to mind just now. As you say the BBC produces very high quality shows. The only slight I can think of is that they have not made the I-player internationally available, so I can see shows I have to miss due to work, school etc. here in the Netherlands.
Dutch national TV is a lot like the BBC, though it has a lot lower budget and it has a structure that dates back from the 50's. Dutch national TV is split up into multiple broadcasting companies that have their origins in political parties or otherwise and they get time allotted to them. The amount of time that they are allowed generally depends on the ammount of members they have and how their shows have preformed in the past. However Dutch Commercial channels produce a lot less garbage than the British ones it would appear.

agreed, JJ, ITV and channel 4 do offer good stuff. ITV has panorama... on occasions and Channel 4 has... had Dispatches.
well they have good stuff, but they don't have it that often. Channel 4 is too often clogged down in reality TV shows and ITV has too much light stuff.

We get a lot of BBC shows in the states. I first heard Monty Python in 1975 on the radio. I think the skit was some game show or something.
The thing is that I don't watch much TV and don't pay attention to where shows come from. Ones that I can think of off the top of my head are
Dr Who
'Allo 'Allo <--love that one
Are Masterpiece and Mystery from the BBC?
Great Performances?
BBC News
Last of Summer Wine
Fawlty Towers
Some others that I can picture but don't remember the name.
Also a lot of movies, documentaries, etc.
It's been 1.5 years since I watched TV so I don't remember what's on.

the main reason why I bring this up is that the government are going to be reviewing how the BBC spends it's money, and also re-evaluate the license fee. This could mean a massive cut in the amount the BBC can put out, and also meaning it will have to sell a lot of it's stuff to other companies.
So far it seems the current Tory government is trying it's level best to systematically murder everything that the british people are proud of. next they will be banning moaning about the weather.

My first encounter with the BBC was Doctor Who back in the 80s. Even though it was extremely campy back then, it was awesome.
I also saw Fawlty Towers which was really funny.

I have had almost no exposure to the merry old English channel. I get all my news online though, and I've read a lot of articles from the BBC website. I don't know if that counts for anything.
I dropped my cable so now I get a whole lot of nothing.
I just want to say though: I am 110% okay with the idea of British taxpayers paying for something, and then me being able to get access to it.

Ah, my favorite BBC would be Monty Python, with "Search for the Holy Grail" as an all time favorite of mine. I like satire and slap-stick humor.

on a couple of quick notes, basically show recommendations (some of these will be on youtube, I think)
for those who like Doctor who. apart from the latest series (which is fan-f**king-tastic), Being humans is a good series to look out for. it is essentially Twilight but done in britain and done right (the vampire don't sparkle!). it's a great series.
for those who like monty python, the spiritual successor to it in slap-stick, satire and sheer controversy is the young ones. it's a legendary series, if a little dated.

be warned, JJ, Being human is a much more adult look at vampires... yes, sex, swearing and sexual identity is discussed within. if you think your daughter can handle it, more power to you, but if not, you might have to look at something else.

before this turns into HC blind date, I just want to make a quick announcements about other shows that are criminally under-rated.
QI- the informational gameshow about various bit of quite interesting information, hosted by the imaculate steven fry.
mock the week- the topical gameshow which picks up the torch where HIGNFY dropped it, really.
screenwipe- a look at telly from within the telly industry from the dry wit of Charlie brooker.
