Realn00b you gotta settle down man. I would also recommend editing your post and getting rid of the swears.

My opinion on the sketches is quite a negative one. I dont at all like the cartoony look. I can only hope this dissapears in the final version. I would much prefer a more realistic approach. To me it seems that H5 is aimed at a younger audience, i seriously hope not.

Edit: Didnt notice the date on that Who cares now!

I seriously hope it is not aimed towards a yonger audience, but I for one kinda hope there is touch of the 'cartoony' in it. HoMM 1/2, M&M (Clouds / Darkside of Xeen) which I consider to be the best in the series had a very cartoony look and feel at certain points and in certain aspects.

While I hope the 'dark' villinous element isn't cartoony, I would like to a see a touch of humor and comic relief in the characters of this game.

Eh, maybe a fine line. But I'm sure UbiSoft will pull it off.

How much longer until they give us some substantive information? Discussion on this board is about worthless until we get some hard information about the game. "Unofficial" development for this long makes me wonder if this game is ever going to materialize. Ubisoft should make an announcement before we all move on... again.

Hi there!
I've found some news (22. Oct) about the game development.
It's not much but it looks like they didn't drop the project.

Cool ! JJ deserves a QP!

Nice...well let's make a simple calculation: autumn 2005+ eventual anullations(max 6 months or so)+ other things = Hey, the game might reach the stores by the summer of 2006!
So the developer is Nival, a russian company. What game did they make...Rage of Mages, which wasn't a dezaster, I liked it anyway...But I don't trust russian companies (Midnight Nowhere, Kreed-I think- were calamnities).

Well we arent going to see cartoony creatures unless they use CEL-SHADING or sumthing. Remember this is 3D. its hard to make cartoons in 3d

Look at Warcraft III. The graphics there look rather cartoonish (especially the char portraits), but no one would argue it's appealing to a lower age group. I liked the graphics in Warcraft III, and if HoMM V turns out like that, I will definately be pleased. Of course, if they go cel-shading, there will be hell to pay for.

I really like the graphics I've seen so far. Once they get cleaned up (there's not much detail compared to today's killer graphics) they're going to look extremely nice, even if they are a bit cartoonish.

The one feature I truly love about HoMM 3 is the hotseat capability (sorry, never played IV). I'm currently running 2 games at school, and there's no way that would be possible without the hotseat function.

But, there is the recommendation of simultaneous turns, which would solve the day 1 rush problem (and all things similar). However, I think that is too big a trade off to justify removing hotseat. Also, simultaneous turns would bring it a little too close to being an RTS for my liking. I'm not sure what other arguments there are against hotseat, but I know that HoMM would not be HoMM without it.

umm heroes 3 was the best one imo, 4 was terrible the 3d movement and things were too girly compared to three, the songs were terrible in 4 omg, and the movements of 3d objects was just plain aweful, and characters were pretty shiaty.

Reality Check

Once I heard the game may be "cartoony" I was pretty upset, so I ventured fourth to try and convince myself the game would NOT have a cartoony look.  Mainly because if it does many of the veteran Heroes fans will be devestated.

I started thinking though........Ubisoft creams themselves when it comes to making CROSS-PLATFORM games.....Hell, go to their website, click on PC games, PS2 games, and Xbox games.....The entire first page has the same games for ALL systems.  What do many platform games usually have that PC games have less of?.....You guessed it.....A CARTOONY look.  Take the new Pirates game for example.  It came out on PC before the platform, but you could easilly tell it was designed with a platform in mind...the controls, cartoony graphics, etc.

This breeds a horrible realization that Ubisoft is probably making a game with CONSOLES mostly in mind.....meaning that if this IS a cross-platform game like Ubi loves to embrace. (more money...what else matters to most game companies?

Then again maybe it's been said somewhere that H5 will be 100% PC ONLY, and I am worrying about nothing.  I tried to also convince myself that the drawings where just VERY crude early drawings and you can't really judge a darn thing based on that....then I recall the 100+ other games I have seen developer drawings for the did NOT turn out cartoony, and every single one was in NO way cartoony looking as the ones here.....so that's another reason for me to worry, lol.  Let us not also forget the fact the people working on H5 are not the people who did the previous heroes.

I'm just under this impression based on all this circumstantial evidence, that basically Ubi or whatever team they hired to make the game said "Ok we want a game sort like it's predecesors but we want it multi-platform, or even worse the people working on H5 are used to ONLY making cartoony type games and this is how they're making it.  I also get the feeling that Ubi could give a crap in keeping the "ideals" of the Heroes series that were kept with previous versions.  I see the possibility of them using the Heroes name as a means to sell a game that's nothing at all like the games before it, we may all be very, very disappointed

As I said before though.....I'm not elite news gatherer of H5 news, I'm sure someone out there can please, please offer some evidence that at least some of what I said is not true.

This isn't a troll post or anything, I think what I need here is someone to put my mind at ease that this isn't going to be a multi-platform cartoony piece of crap, that's all

I think the only thing we can do by now is to wait. I have no doubt the game will be released and the project hasn't been canceled. Maybe will be announced on the E3 this year and released by Christmas days. I prefer a late game which have a good development (quality guarantees) than an early game with a poor development (=H4 disaster).

News:

"Today Ubi Soft announced its product catalog for fiscal year 2005-2006 (ending March 31, 2006), including a new chapter Brothers in Arms, Prince if Persia 3, two new games in the Might & Magic brand (supposedly both strategy games) and more..."

From the catalog:

Q3 FY05-06
Heroes of Might & Magic® 5 - PC
Product with Might & Magic brand - PC

P.S. I wouldn't worry about the cartoony look; looking at the concept art for Heroes Online, I am doubtful any of the two M&M games will be "cartoony".

That makes no sense at all. Have you ever played Heroes 2? It's very cartoony, 3 and 4 somewhat less, but still far from realistic.

yeah...

Yeah I'm a vet of the M&M series. If the graphics are too realistic I'm going to be really dissapointed. I think of M&M 2 as the best followed closely by M&M 3 and 1 .

All of the Might and Magic games should be light-hearted and tongue-in-cheek. Anyone remember the instruction manuals that came out with the first 3D Might and Magic RPG and the first Heroes game? The graphics need to capture and reflect that feel.
